Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Slate (“we,” “us,” or “Slate”) collects, uses, and protects information when you use our personal finance application and related services (the “Service”). By using Slate, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information We Collect
Account information. When you sign up, we collect your email address and authentication credentials. If you sign in with Google, we receive your email and basic profile information from Google.
Financial data via Plaid. When you connect a bank or brokerage account, our partner Plaid Inc. handles the connection. We never see your bank login. Through Plaid, we receive account balances, transactions, account and institution metadata, and related financial details you authorize.
Information you provide. Budgets, income entries, manual assets, home values, household members, planning assumptions, scenarios, and chat messages you write.
Payment information. Subscription payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your full card number. We retain a customer ID, subscription status, plan, and billing metadata.
Usage and device data. Standard log data such as IP address, browser type, pages viewed, and timestamps, used to operate and secure the Service.
Advertising measurement. On our marketing pages we load Google Ads (gtag.js) to measure the performance of our ads. Ad-measurement cookies are set to denied by default via Google Consent Mode v2 and only activate if you click “Accept” on our consent banner. We never share financial data with Google.
2. How We Use Your Information
- Provide and improve the Service, including spending analysis, budgeting, and planning features.
- Authenticate you and protect your account.
- Process subscription payments and send transactional emails (e.g., receipts, budget summaries).
- Power AI features you choose to use, including the in-app chat and external assistants (Claude, ChatGPT) you connect via MCP.
- Detect, prevent, and respond to fraud, abuse, and security incidents.
- Comply with legal obligations.
3. AI and Assistant Access
Slate offers AI features that read your financial data to answer your questions. When you use the in-app chat, prompts and relevant context are sent to our AI provider (currently Google via the Lovable AI Gateway) for processing. When you connect an external assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT through MCP, that assistant only accesses your data when you ask it to, and only the data needed to answer. You can revoke access at any time from Settings.
We do not sell your financial data, and we do not use your financial data to train third-party AI models.
4. How We Share Information
We share information only with service providers who help us run Slate:
- Plaid — bank connections and transaction data.
- Stripe — payment processing and subscription management.
- Supabase — managed database, authentication, and storage.
- AI providers — to power chat and assistant features you initiate.
- Email providers — to deliver transactional and account emails.
We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect rights and safety, or in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets (with notice to you).
We do not sell your personal information.
5. Households
If you join or invite others to a household, members of that household can view shared financial data, budgets, accounts, and planning assumptions associated with the household. Only invite people you trust. You can leave a household at any time from Settings.
6. Data Retention
We keep your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where we must retain information for legal, accounting, or fraud-prevention purposes.
7. Security
We use industry-standard safeguards, including encryption in transit, row-level authorization, and least-privilege access controls. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal data, and to object to or restrict certain processing. To exercise these rights, contact us at the email below. You can also disconnect bank accounts and delete data directly from Settings.
9. Children
Slate is not directed to children under 13 (or 16 in the EEA/UK). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
10. International Users
Slate is operated from the United States. If you use the Service from outside the U.S., you understand your information will be transferred to and processed in the U.S.
11. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. We will post the new effective date at the top and, for material changes, notify you by email or in-app.
